A $1.9 trillion COVID-19 aid package facing a U.S. Senate vote includes funding for states and local communities to tackle behavioral health and addiction after record-level drug overdose deaths nationwide in 2020.
At a virtual roundtable Monday with Connecticut addiction prevention and treatment providers, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said he hopes additional money will help boost on-the-ground efforts.
“But it is a trickle compared to the volume that we need, the resources that are necessary,” he said.
Connecticut substance use disorder experts early on warned that the COVID-19 pandemic could worsen the ongoing opioid epidemic and related fatal overdoses. Now almost a year into the pandemic, they’re finding that to be true.

The failures of elder care in Canada, as Picard argues, began long before the novel coronavirus arrived.
Readers may be surprised that Picard forgoes lambasting the easy villains in the devastating crisis for-profit care providers, “bad apple” care staff in service of a deeper indictment of Canada’s refusal to value elders in life as well as in death.
Ten months after we first spoke about health reporting, I reached Picard by phone in Vancouver, where he is spending the winter as an Asper Visiting Professor at the University of British Columbia.
We discussed the difficulty of writing about people who often can’t speak for themselves, what accountability for these preventable deaths could look like, and how his optimism that the pandemic will be a turning point for elder care has managed to stay alight.
JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia has detected two cases of the more infectious COVID-19 variant first discovered in Britain, officials said on Tuesday, marking a potential new complication for the country as it tries to contain one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in Asia. Dante Saksono Harbuwono, the deputy health minister, said the discovery of the variant represented a new challenge. We ll be facing this pandemic with a higher degree of difficulty, he told a streamed conference. Indonesia s COVID-19 task force also confirmed cases of the variant, known as B117, had been found but declined further comment. Since Indonesia announced its first cases of COVID-19 a year ago it has reported more than 1.3 million infections and 36,000 deaths, though daily infections have been falling recently after peaking in January and early February. The British variant has also been found in other countries in Southeast Asia including Vietnam and the Philippines. Riza Putranto, a genomics researcher in
